Plants were sold by students to students, teachers, and other members of the community.
From May 14-15, science teacher India Carlson hosted her annual plant sale in her classroom greenhouse. Proceeds went toward horticulture and botany classes at Ballard, allowing the school to continue to offer the elective and providing Carlson with the means to create an enriching educational experience.
“The plant sale is the only thing that keeps the program alive,” Carlson said. Carlson says that she receives some funds from the Career and Technical Education sector of Washington state, but that those only cover about half of what the class spends on resources each year.
All plants were grown by Carlson’s students, and some volunteered to run the show, working in the greenhouse Thursday and Friday after school and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Most of the plants sold were edible. The students produced a variety of tomatoes and herbs as well as some ornamental flowers, with prices from $2.00 to $7.00.
