Mountain Bike Club fundraiser hosts teen musical talent

Originally published February 27, 2015

Seattle teen music came together at the Ballard Elks Club on Feb. 20, for a night of live jams—the slow ones, the fast ones, the dubstep flutist and the unplugged neo-folk rock. Proceeds from the show went to help fund the Mountain Bike Team, who hosted the show as well as putting on a first class raffle.

Senior Elijah Kirk and junior Meg Shepherd run through their rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” before the show. “Merry Christmas, everyone,” Kirk said before stepping off stage at the end of the tune. Shepherd remained for three more endearing uke covers of Vance Joy’s “Riptide,” Hozier’s “Take Me to Church,” and Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly.” The high trill, bumped-octave Elvis croon of Shepherd’s vocals was much appreciated by the crowd.

“I’m breaking out Old Bess tonight, as I have for six or seven years,” said senior Noah Forslund of his acoustic guitar, originally a gift from his uncle. Of all the night’s performers, Forslund was one of the most comfortable in his own sound. His voice was like a Bowie-esque, thin-lipped sneer, caught as it fell by a deep bass foundation. His lyrics peel out in the driveway and cruise around on cold, midnight thoroughfares until they find their home in a tradition of dramatic rock narratives—disenchantment and lost boys yelling at skies and the wrongs in the world and women around them. One of Forslund’s standouts, “Sandy Said,” was the soliloquy of a boy who reflects on the unrequited light he holds for a schoolmate: “Sandy said she wants to be alone/ Sandy said her heart is made of stone.”

The Bewlay Brothers, named after the David Bowie song of the same name, is made up of guitar-drums duo Jasper Coté and Percy Boyle. Now in their junior year, the two have played together in various forms since ninth grade. The Bewlay Brothers is a wall of loud growl, accented by the wailing of feedback. Except this wasn’t the way all the time. Coté and Boyle seemingly play what they like, meaning you’re not going to see one set. There was a fascinating shift at some point when the show slowed and the distortion came down and the Bewlay Brothers made time for a trance—clean guitar repetition, over and over, the hook, again and again, like waves heavy on the chest and its heartbeat. Over Coté, came Boyle’s vocals—nearly spoken word—so disinterested and dry, perpetually in the moment just before petering out. The Bewlay Brothers know what they’re doing with their noise.
