“out of place” [sic]. Stephanie Shao. Charcoal, ink pen and colored pencil.
“red dream” [sic]. Stephanie Shao. Charcoal, ink pen and water color.
Stephanie Shao’s “out of place” (top) and “red dream” (bottom) and are two off-kilter impressions of characters Hamlet and Gertrude from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”
Shao takes her understanding of internal and external conflicts in each character and draws parallels to types of people she is familiar with in her life.
Shao said that she used a style reminiscent of blind contour drawings, helping to portray the two distinctly afflicted characters.
