Why do spring sports have a reputation of being more interesting and how do they differ from other seasons? Spring sports have a tendency to feel more social and fun. They are known to be more involved and present in the daily life.
Sophomore Owen Skinner plays soccer and swims. He likes soccer more because of the community.
“I feel like, in the spring, you can make so many more connections with people, especially [in] a team sport like soccer and lacrosse,” said Skinner. “The way the sport feels is more like a team spirit than the individual self.”
Skinner describes how the weather can affect one’s mood. He thinks that the warm weather makes it so that he enjoys the outdoors more.
“Playing outside, when it is warmer, is so much more fun in the sun than if I was in a pool inside while it was dark and raining outside,” Skinner said.
He also describes the amount of sports during the spring rather than in the fall and the winter. He also thinks that the diversity in sports can create more connections.
“In fall, for guys, there is only cross country and football, and in the winter there is only basketball, wrestling and swimming,” Skinner said. “In the spring though, there is lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track and baseball.”
Thanks to the good weather, it is easier to be social and it gives a happier ambience. This allows for more outside time.
“The good weather helps with good mood, and can lift spirits,” Skinner said. “The gradually warming weather helps with the mood of the sports and how people feel when they play.”
Senior Dorrie Jacobson runs track during the spring and plays soccer in the fall, both on the school’s varsity teams.
“I feel like I connect with people on track because of the large number of people and the sense of community,” Jacobson said.
The sport has a sense of community unlike the way that soccer is organized. She thinks that thanks to the amount of people, she can make more friends.
“Even though track is more of an individual sport, I feel like with the warming weather, it is possible to connect with people,” Jacobson said.
The end of the year also contributes to the mood included in spring sports. Jacobson likes to know her exact times and how well she does on track.
“In track, I feel like I know exactly how well I do with the times and distances and I can track my progress, while in soccer, it is harder to tell how well you can do because you also have to count on your teammates,” Jacobson said.
Senior nights can be much more fun thanks to the sports being at the end of the year. Senior nights are much more emotional in the spring because it is closer to the end of the year.
“Thanks to the end of the year, the senior nights are much more serious and are actually real,” said Jacobson.
This is how spring is different from the other seasons in terms of sports.
