Senior Miles Price steps up on the mat and sees his opponent. Only wrestlers know the struggles of the mat. The challenges that wrestlers have are unknown to others but they are still there.
“I have never done a sport that was so demanding and yet so fun and exhilarating,” Price said. “I look [forward]to it every day and am so happy that I became so good at it.”
Price started out as a football player in freshman year but when he discovered wrestling in the winter, he loved knowing that he had the power and the ability to win.
“The feeling of being in control is great,” Price said. “I like to know that I can blame myself if I lose and praise myself if I win instead of blaming or praising the whole team.”
Although Price likes to be in control of his game, He talks about the challenges of weight cuts and how friends can be annoying about it. Weight cuts are necessary for most wrestlers because they must stay under their weight class
“Sometimes people will tease me about what they are eating or tease me about pictures of my favorite foods,” Price said. “They just don’t know how it is to have to deal with this sort of thing.”
He shares how over the years, weight cutting has become easier. The experience is simple but demanding and can affect one’s mental health. His teammates say that he is a champion at it and that they could never be as good as him.
“Freshman year was really tough,” Price said. “I was hungry a lot but couldn’t eat. Over the years though, I’ve adapted more to weight cutting and I can easily cut weight.”
Price shows his dominance on the mat while his teammates observe him to gain knowledge and be a better wrestler as they observe his technique. They see him as an example and a mentor. They admire his way of fighting and his respectfulness to both the referee and his opponent.
“I am always respectful on the mat but I am not afraid to take [my opponent]down,” Price said. “I listen to the calls the ref makes.”
His teammates observe his composure and say that he always has a poker face while he fights. He has a straight face and looks very serious when he is focused on his opponent and the play.
“Wrestling allows me to be in control of myself and my game,” said Price. “The sport allows for so much control and play time.”
Price is proud to be a captain on the wrestling team because he has seen the team grow since freshman year. He is going to miss it a lot once he graduates. He loves the feel of the mat.
“When I am on the mat, I feel like I am the best and I focus only on my opponent and the best way to take them down,” Price said.
Price is excited to finish his last wrestling season strong and to get a great score and go to the state competition. Wrestling has been doing well this year.
