As the Ballard Beavers conquer the 2024 basketball season, Senior Davis Brewster and Sophomore Nolan Larson lead their team as this year’s captains. Brewster has been playing basketball for 10 years, four of which have been for BHS. He is a captain not only for BHS Basketball, but also for the BHS Boys Lacrosse team.
Being captain means a lot to Larson, having played basketball for his entire life. When asked about who their biggest competitor was going to be this season, Larson was very confident.
“[We have] No competitors,” Larson said.
The team has been working hard in the offseason to make it to playoffs this year. With weight rooms, practices and team dinners, they have been on their a-game and are prepared to win. The team is close, due to how much time they spend together.
“It’s fun, it’s like a brotherhood and a grind,” Brewster said.
Being captain of a varsity team as a sophomore is not easily done. After much hard work on and off the court, Larson’s coach recognized his consistency and effort.
“It means a lot to me,” Larson said. “I worked for it.”
“My coach saw me as captain for lacrosse, so I had the leadership skills that were necessary,” Brewster said.
To Brewster, their team is like a bunch of friends all working hard together. Being a leader, he is able to guide his teammates in the best direction.
“It’s a lot of responsibility to make sure my teammates are staying in line,” Brewster said.
Basketball is a largetime commitment and balancing the student and the athlete gets hard. After four years of doing this, Brewster has it down.
“I use my time management skills to do my work in class,” Brewster said. “You [have] to focus… because you won’t really have time to do it after school.”
Larson hopes to continue playing basketball throughout college and even into the NBA. Brewster will not be doing basketball past high school, but will be playing lacrosse in college.
The team is hoping to make the state playoffs. They are practicing and preparing for these games everyday and their competitive nature is tested as they scrimmage during practice. The team stays positive even when losing and are kept mentally sharp.
These captains will lead their team with positivity and motivation. The season is looking good for the Ballard Beavers.
