The anticipation has been mounting all month now. The football team has won five games in a row, preparing to play in the most spirited game in high school football, Homecoming. The only problem is, the game has been cancelled.

Today, Ballard’s Homecoming opponent, The Franklin Quakers, forfeited the game due to lack of players. “I think right now, they just don’t want to play a lot of their players due to risks,” senior lineman Aaron Fandel said in a text message. “Or any kids to get more hurt, like bad.”

According to the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association rules and regulations, “When a scheduled contest is forfeited, the team granted the forfeit is declared the winning team and the team that caused the forfeit is declared the losing team.” The Beavers will automatically get the win and bring their record to 6-1 while Franklin will drop to 0-7.

Players and fans alike were shocked by the late cancellation. “Homecoming being cancelled is a big let down because this whole week has been dedicated to getting hyped for it,” sophomore Maia Gryskiewicz said in a text.

The team itself is trying to move past this and look on to later weeks. “Most people I’m sure wanted to play, especially for homecoming,” Fandel said. “But sometimes things happen and you just have to roll with it.”

The Homecoming dance will be unaffected and remain this Sat. Oct. 17. According to athletic director Carrie Burr, other Homecoming festivities, such as the halftime show and Senior night, will be on Oct. 30 at Memorial Stadium, during the last home game. The game will be a playoff for either Metro Championships or for 3rd/4th place, depending on the results of next week’s games.

Senior night’s scheduling will rely on the game’s timing. “If our game is at 5 p.m., Senior night will be held prior to the game,” Burr said in an email to staff. “If we are playing in the 7:45 p.m. game, Senior night will be held immediately after the game.”
