Chess club members begin their games at their weekly meeting. Meetings are every Thursday after school in SW204.

Chess Club is gaining more members by the week and is still looking for more chess players to join.

Founded and led by junior Firomsa Abdurahman, the group calls themselves “Firomsa and Friends.” The group  meets every Thursday in SW204 at 2:30 p.m and is advised by math teacher Michael Broom.

The club is a place to meet new friends and play fun and competitive chess, yet no experience is necessary. Their catchphrase is how they describe the club: “Something light for the kids.”

“I like going to chess club because it’s a place to just chill with the bros and play a very sophisticated game,” junior Christian Phillips said.

The club is dedicated to the seriousness of the game. As a group, they created a list of rules, a point system, and a ranking system.

Chess Club is very structured. They have a no cursing rule that is taken very seriously, and the ranks range from Class C to Grandmaster.

Each Thursday, the members’ names are randomized to determine who plays whom. Then they begin. Each win counts as 10 points while each loss deducts five points.
